Yes. Wegovy is marketed in India by Novo Nordisk and is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity [5]. It is titrated up to 2.4 mg, the dose studied in the pivotal trials.
Wegovy is a Schedule H, prescription-only medicine and cannot be bought without a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner, which is why this page has no buy button. Since the Indian semaglutide patent expired in March 2026, the same molecule is also sold by Indian manufacturers at substantially lower prices, and Novo Nordisk has cut Wegovy's price in response [6]. Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics glucagon-like peptide-1, one of the incretin hormones your gut releases after eating, closely enough to act like the real thing but last about a week instead of minutes.

In SELECT, semaglutide 2.4 mg cut major cardiovascular events by about 20% in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity, without diabetes [2].

Rare but serious risks (pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and severe allergic reactions) are screened for against your personal and family history before any prescription [5]. Gallbladder disorders were reported more often on semaglutide than on placebo in STEP 1 [1]. Using Wegovy
Wegovy is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week, on the same day each week, into the abdomen or the thigh, or the upper arm if someone else is administering it. It can be taken with or without food, and at any time of day. Rotate the site every week rather than injecting the same spot twice in a row [5].

Where to inject: abdomen or thigh (upper arm if administered by someone else). Divide the area into four sections and use a different one each week, keeping each injection at least a finger-width from the last and 5 cm from the belly button.

Wegovy is never started at a treatment dose. The standard schedule [5] begins at 0.25 mg once weekly for four weeks and steps up roughly every four weeks through 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 1.7 mg to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, taking about four months in total. This is the typical plan; yours may look different, and your doctor may hold you at a lower dose if it is working well.

Wegovy has come down sharply in price. Novo Nordisk cut Indian prices in November 2025 and again from 1 April 2026, reportedly by up to 48%, after the semaglutide patent expired and more than forty Indian manufacturers entered the market [6]. Wegovy now starts from roughly ₹5,660 a month at the 0.25 mg dose. One pen covers about four weeks, and the cost rises as you titrate upward.

Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and both are made by Novo Nordisk. The difference is the licensed indication and the dose ceiling.
Wegovy is approved specifically for chronic weight management and is titrated up to 2.4 mg. Ozempic is licensed for blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes and is carried to 1 mg in India. Rybelsus is the same molecule as a daily oral tablet.
Wegovy has been studied clinically for weight loss; Ozempic has not been specifically evaluated for weight management, even though people with diabetes often lose weight while taking it. Prescribing Ozempic for weight loss is off-label use, and it is a decision for your doctor to make and justify.
This is the honest question of 2026, and the answer is genuinely not obvious.
The molecule is identical. DCGI-approved Indian products contain the same semaglutide and must demonstrate equivalence to the reference product. One Indian manufacturer reported a head-to-head Phase III study showing non-inferior efficacy and a comparable safety profile [6].
What Wegovy carries is the evidence package. The STEP and SELECT trial data on this page were generated with Wegovy, and it is the product with the longest global real-world track record, an established device, and a well-characterised cold chain.
What the Indian brands offer is access. A several-fold price difference over a treatment measured in months, not weeks, is not a small consideration, and cost is one of the biggest reasons people stop treatment early.

They are different molecules. Wegovy's semaglutide acts on one receptor, GLP-1. Tirzepatide acts on two, GIP and GLP-1, which is why it is called a dual agonist.
Average weight reduction is higher with tirzepatide in the obesity trials, and in head-to-head data in type 2 diabetes it outperformed semaglutide 1 mg on both HbA1c and weight. Tirzepatide remains under patent in India with no generic expected for years, so it is substantially more expensive.
Wegovy's counterweight is its outcomes evidence: the SELECT cardiovascular data [2] is a stronger dataset than anything currently published for tirzepatide in that specific population. Which suits you is a clinical decision, not a ranking. Read our tirzepatide page.
Switching between semaglutide products, including between Wegovy and an Indian brand, is usually straightforward because the molecule is the same, and it is normally done at an equivalent dose. It should still be a decision your doctor makes and documents, because device technique changes and the dose steps available may differ.
Switching between Wegovy and tirzepatide is a different matter. The two are not dose-equivalent, so you restart low and titrate up again. Most people notice reduced appetite within the first few weeks, but meaningful weight loss builds over months rather than days. Because the starting dose is an initiation dose and titration to 2.4 mg takes about four months, the trial results were measured over 68 weeks, not 8.
Some people feel appetite reduction early; others only notice significant changes after moving to higher doses. The rate of weight loss varies widely and is influenced by food choices, age, activity level, sleep, stress, and other medicines, so there is no single weekly rate that applies to everyone.
After your final dose, Wegovy can stay in the body for roughly five to seven weeks, because semaglutide has an approximate one-week half-life. Full clearance may take around eight to ten weeks, depending on individual factors such as kidney function and general health. Over this period, its effects on appetite and blood sugar control fade gradually.
Wegovy should be kept in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C. It must not be frozen or exposed to direct light. If you are travelling, plan the cold chain in advance and speak to your Kare Team rather than improvising — a pen that has been left warm is not reliably usable [5].
Take your injection on the same day each week to maintain a steady routine and get the most from your treatment.

There is no absolute prohibition, but it is worth discussing with your prescriber. Alcohol adds calories without satiety, can worsen the nausea and reflux that are already the most common side effects, and heavy drinking may reduce how well treatment works.
A common guideline is to keep alcohol to no more than 1 drink per day for women and 2 for men. Your doctor can give advice tailored to your health and treatment plan.
